#HopeIsPower – The National Shelter Movement

This non-profit organisation was founded in 2008 at a conference of shelters nationally and its secretariat is the Nisaa Institute for Women’s Development. It has a special place in its heart for women and children who have been victims of gender-based violence. As an organisation, it seeks to network, advocate and lobby provincial, national and international stakeholders, and engage in service provision, legislation and capacity building on gender-based violence and sheltering of abused women and their children in South Africa.

The National Shelter Movement was assisted by Hollywoodbets through the #HopeIsPower initiative. On Thursday, 12 August, Team Members from Hollywoodbets paid a visit to the organisation in Phoenix to donate food hampers, in an effort to help them after the recent violent protests and looting in the country. The food hampers contained essential items, which will help to sustain the organisation in the coming days.

“The main concern during the riots was our food security issue. We had challenges in obtaining basic necessities, such as bread and milk, baby formula and diapers for our clients that live at the shelters.”

She also thanked Hollywoodbets for their “overwhelming response” and “thoughtful gesture” and added that the food items will be distributed to all of the other shelters within the province.
