The Hollywood Foundation is helping strengthen the future of amateur cricket in KwaZulu-Natal, equipping players with essential cricket kits to support their development and create greater opportunities to thrive in the sport.
This is according to African Warriors Cricket Club chairperson Knowledge Vilakazi, who was speaking following a cricket kit handover at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium recently.
“Since receiving the kit, we have been inundated with aspiring players wanting to play under our colours. It is encouraging. The more players we can provide with quality coaching and opportunities to represent the club, the better,” said Vilakazi.
Established in 1999, African Warriors Cricket Club was formed with the mandate of promoting the sport and developing emerging talent. Over the years, the club has built a reputation for identifying and nurturing promising cricketers, several of whom have gone on to achieve success at higher levels.
Among the players who developed their skills at the club are Hollywoodbets Dolphin cricketers Khaya Zondo, Andile Phehlukwayo, Andile Simelane, Nqobani Mokoena and female cricketer Lungy Khwela.
Vilakazi highlighted the importance of providing aspiring players with the necessary equipment and resources to develop their abilities, pointing to Mokoena’s early experiences at the club.
“When Mokoena joined us, he did not even have a pair of cricket boots or a bat. Hopefully, we will continue to attract and develop more players who can go on to compete at the highest level. In South Africa, we have talent in abundance,” he said.
Vilakazi also praised the Hollywood Foundation for its continued support of the club, highlighting how the partnership has helped address some of the logistical and financial challenges associated with the sport.
“Our partnership with Hollywood has been far-reaching over the years. At times, it has even enabled us to transport players from different areas across Durban to participate in our activities. We also know that cricket is not exactly the cheapest sport,” said Vilakazi.
This move reinforces the importance of partnerships in grassroots sport, helping to make cricket more accessible while creating opportunities for aspiring players to develop their skills and pursue their sporting ambitions.
The partnership also forms part of the Hollywood Foundation’s My Sports pillar, through which the Foundation creates development pathways that nurture talent through coaching and progression opportunities, invests in safe and accessible facilities, and connects sports participation and skills development with employment and enterprise opportunities.
By removing financial barriers through equipment donations and grassroots support, the programme expands access to sport and ensures that it serves not only as a platform for athletic performance, but also as a catalyst for long-term personal growth and economic development.
