Sport continues to be a positive platform for the youth in our country. It has proven to have a positive effect on their overall mental and physical wellbeing. The Hollywood Foundation recognises this, and through various initiatives, the Team aims to leave a long-lasting impact on many grassroots development clubs across South Africa. With this in mind, the Team in the Western Cape was proud to make another soccer sponsorship in March, to a fast-growing football club that is continuing to change the lives of young athletes.
Shepherds Football Club was formed in 2004, and is based in Belville, Western Cape. There are five teams within the club, Under-10, Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 and the senior team. Junior structures have also been put into place, in order to ensure that young talent are given the necessary training and support to flourish. There are 120 players in total, who enjoy practice sessions that occur four times a week. One of the club’s proudest moments was winning the League in 2011, and some players have also moved up to play for the Castle/SAB League. There was a great need to create this football club, due to the social ills that were widespread and prevalent within the community. The youth was exposed to a life that consisted of drugs, alcohol and crime, and it became apparent that they needed an outlet to learn basic skills and remain fit and active. One of the Team Members came across this club, after watching them play in a soccer tournament at Belville Sports Centre and was impressed with the skills and talent of the players. The Team Member saw a great need to assist the club, and with the help of the Hollywood Foundation, Shepherds Football Club was able to receive new sporting kits. The handover formed part of a soccer sponsorship, and the Team from Belville presented the players with the new kits on 4 March 2023.
A Coach at the club thanked the Hollywood Foundation for the much-needed support and said that the contribution will be a positive way to attract more players.
