This non-profit organisation promotes the physical and mental development of persons with disabilities. Their main goal is to try instill a high level of independence in their members, in order to allow them to integrate into society. APD’s work includes running placement programmes, as well as providing residential facilities, protective workshops and community-based projects. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic they have been struggling to support their beneficiaries due to the economic impact the crisis has had and the fact that they rely on contributions from the community. To that end, leading bookmaker Hollywoodbets donated food items to the value of R12 500 that will go towards providing meals to their 54 beneficiaries.
This important donation came about courtesy of a collaboration between the Hollywoodbets My Community Programme and Nomzamo Mbatha’s Lighthouse Foundation where a commitment of R1 million was made to provide relief to 60 NPOs and NGOs across all nine provinces in South Africa that have been affected by this pandemic.
As both APD and Hollywoodbets are well-known in the Polokwane community it felt like a natural decision to join forces during this time. It is the bookmaker’s second donation to the association.
“When we first learned about this organisation it brought us a great deal of comfort to know that the disabled in our community are being looked after, and that they are given the opportunity to develop their skills so they can live more comfortable lives. We understand that this is a trying time for many people in our community. Supporting an organisation with a solid reputation like APD in the outstanding work they do was therefore an easy decision to make,” explained Khanyisa Mkhari, Limpopo Area Manager for Hollywoodbets.
Director of APD, Christa van der Walt, was thankful to have received the additional support during lockdown.

“These food items will allow our centre to continue providing care to our residents. We will be able to prepare meals for our most vulnerable for a few days, and ensure that they don’t go to bed on an empty stomach,” she said.
