Thousands of young children gained access to books, dedicated reading spaces and early literacy resources this Mandela Month as 10 Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres were transformed into vibrant learning environments through the Mandela Month Literacy Legacy Initiative.

Early Childhood Development (ECD) is the critical foundation where a child’s lifelong love for learning is born. Yet, many of these vital community spaces lack the resources to foster a truly rich learning environment. The Mandela Month Literacy Legacy Initiative is changing this narrative by focusing on the tangible, joyful experiences of the children themselves.

This project is defined by the physical and emotional transformation of the learning environment. To drive this change, the Hollywood Foundation has purchased 1,500 books for young learners and donated essential early development toys to stimulate cognitive and skill growth.

This nationwide footprint touches 10 selected ECD centres across all nine provinces, establishing inviting reading corners. The participating centres benefiting from this initiative include:

  • Bolokegang Community Project
  • Kingdom Day Care Centre
  • Sizanani Creche
  • Wise Owls Early Childhood Development Centre
  • My Little Angels Academy
  • Injongo Educare Centre
  • Thabong Creche
  • Ikageng Day Care Centre
  • Ebenezer Creche and pre-school
  • The Pride Day Care Centre

These corners will be packed with:

  • Vibrant Books and Educational Resources that bring stories to life and foster early literacy skills.
  • Storytelling and Reading Activities that spark curiosity and deep connection.
  • Educational Take-Home Packs so that the joy of reading travels from the classroom directly to the family home.

These resources are not just for a single day, they will remain at the centres to support ongoing literacy, creativity, and development for years to come.

Amongst the beneficiaries was Sizanani centre on the outskirts of Verulam, north of Durban. The centre has over 40 children from underserved communities.

Hollywood Foundation Portfolio Manager, CSI, Rivaan Naidu highlighted Mandela’s selflessness and the importance of giving back. ‘’It ties in with what we do at Hollywood Foundation. We focus on giving to the community for the entire year.  Our focus is on the early childhood for development,’’ said Naidu.

Naidu was joined by team members who rolled up their sleeves by reading and playing with children. The centre’s representative was in all smiles. She said their partnership with Hollywood Foundation goes back to 2025 when the Foundation donated some of their resources which includes a stove to cook meals for over 43 children currently enrolled.

“We are over the moon. We did not know that our plea for help to donors would yield positive results,’’ she continued to express.

True care is a long-term commitment. That is why the initiative is structured to look far beyond a single day of volunteering.

While Phase 1 is all about bringing immediate life, warmth, and books into these classrooms. Following Mandela Day, the Hollywood Foundation intends to conduct close, hands-on site assessments and feasibility reviews directly with centre leaders. The goal is to identify and prioritise critical infrastructure support, whether it’s fixing a leaky roof, securing a play area, or upgrading facilities to ensure these facilities remain safe, dignified spaces for children to grow and enhance learning.
