Durban beaches are often affected by human waste with plenty of foreign objects making their way to the beaches on a daily basis.
A Team of 20 enthusiastic purple cleaners took the #trashtagchallenge in an attempt to help clean up the environment one morning before work.
The group met at Blue Lagoon beach and spent an hour filling 24 refuse bags with waste.
Durban Green Corridor’s Social Media Manager Sifiso Mngoma was thrilled to see the Purple Team get involved in a beach clean-up.
“I want to thank the Hollywoodbets team so much for taking care of nature. I believe that everyone is responsible for the mess around us because it is caused by human beings, so it’s very important that companies encourage their teams to take part in initiatives like these.”
“We need to take care of our oceans because it provides us with most of the oxygen on earth. The ecosystem in the ocean depends on fish and marine animals and the plastic debris causes these fish and animals to die which ultimately destroys the ecosystem of our greatest source of oxygen. We need to educate people about this and protect our oceans,” he said.
According to Hollywoodbets Transformation Consultant Babongile Mkhize this was a worthwhile experience.
“It was a shock to see how much debris was washed up or just left at the beach. Most of it was plastic and nappies, things we can prevent from ending up there by throwing it in a bin or taking it home to put in the bin or by reducing our plastic usage. I would definitely do this again because I learned a lot from the experience.
“I learned that we need to be conscious of how we treat our environment because it is the only way we will be able to preserve it for our future and for the generations to come.”
“Nobody wants to relax on a dirty beach, but if it’s clean we will all want to go and enjoy it, so who’s going to keep it clean if not us?” she said.
