Hollywoodbets and Lighthouse Foundation’s Brighter Future Project injects R31 000 into relief work in Alexandra Township

It is well-known that South Africa’s leading bookmaker, Hollywoodbets, and Nomzamo Mbatha’s Lighthouse Foundation have been partnering in their relief efforts around the COVID-19 pandemic. Together they created the Brighter Future Project which has made R1 million in aid available to 60 NPOs and NGOs around South Africa.
As part of this collaboration the Hollywoodbets My Community Programme made R31 000 in funding available to the Lighthouse Foundation. These funds enabled them to assist communities in need living in the Alexandra (Gauteng) and KwaMashu (KwaZulu-Natal) townships with funding for essential food items.
In Alexandra 20 food vouchers valued at R750 each were handed to those who have been severely affected by the pandemic. The vouchers were granted to homes who take care of vulnerable members of the community like children and the elderly, who are particularly in need of assistance during the national lockdown.
While in KwaMashu three families were assisted directly with a R750 food voucher each, while the remainder of the funds were given to the KwaMashu Soup Kitchen to help sustain them during this tough time. The well-known soup kitchen was able to purchase much-needed new equipment including two four-plate gas stoves, two gas cylinders, a set of knives and dishing spoons, and 200 disposable plates, cups and spoons. These items will help the soup kitchen to go about making meals for the many struggling community members in a more efficient manner.
Mbatha, as CEO of the Lighthouse Foundation, expressed her deepest appreciation to Hollywoodbets for their generous contribution to the organisation.

“During a time when the COVID-19 pandemic is ravaging our country as well as many other countries around the world, we are indeed stronger than ever, in collaboration with you at Hollywoodbets in bringing relief and hope to those severely affected by this global crisis. Your contribution has enabled us as respected agents of change to continue broadening our impact, by reaching out and landing a helping hand to the most vulnerable households in our country,” said Mbatha.

According to Babongile Mkhize, Transformation Officer for Hollywoodbets, the powerful duo has built up a strong relationship over the recent months. “Hollywoodbets first got involved with the Lighthouse Foundation earlier this year because both have closely linked values when it comes to giving back to those in need. When the “Brighter Future” project first came about, there was no doubt that the Lighthouse Foundation should be allocated a portion of the funds to give back to others who are most vulnerable during this time. Many people in the communities of both Alexandra and KwaMashu have been affected by the pandemic and we are pleased to know that we have assisted these people in need together,” she explained.
