The Chatsworth United Cricket Club has been developing athletes for 57 years and it is the oldest club in Chatsworth, Durban. On Tuesday, 28 February 2023, the Purple Team was honoured to visit this club with a cricket sponsorship to help them to continue developing aspiring cricketers.
The club was founded in 1965 and their vision is to groom players from grassroots level to professional level in all areas, including the informal areas. The club has 145 players and is made up of nine teams that are registered to the KZNCU and EMCU cricket leagues. The teams are for Senior Men Premier League, Senior Ladies Premier League, Men Division 11, Men Division 111, Men Division V1, Men Division V11, Youth Under-15, Youth Under-13 and Youth Under-11.
The club’s Premier League Men’s team play their home games at the Chatsworth Cricket Oval, whilst the Premier League Ladies team play their games at Cato Manor and Chats 114. The balance of the Senior Men and Youth teams play on 10 different grounds in and around Chatsworth.
With sports development at grassroots level being a major focus for the Hollywood Foundation, the Purple Team’s mission aligns with the club’s vision. Chatsworth United Cricket Club is a household name in Chatsworth and even nationally whereby some of their ex-players are based. Given Hollywood Foundation’s track history in supporting sporting activities at grassroots level in all communities, the club approached the Purple Team for assistance with the Ladies’ team through a cricket sponsorship.
In their Wishlist, they requested for cricket stumps, wicket keeper gloves, cones, warm up kit, playing kit, caps and tracksuits for the ladies’ team and the Hollywood Foundation was happy to grant their wish.
Michael Govender, the President of the Chatsworth United Cricket Club, said that their main challenges was playing equipment for the Ladies’ team. He said, “We are utterly grateful to the Hollywood Foundation for such a generous cricket sponsorship. This will go a long way.”
