This initiative began in May last year and aims to bring food relief to individuals in the Asherville, Overport and Springtown areas in Durban, amid the coronavirus pandemic. Its first feeding scheme kicked off with 50 people, and they have since grown to now feeding 380 people every Thursday, with grocery hampers also being handed out once a month. At the moment, the initiative has in excess of 90 households on its database, consisting of the elderly, vulnerable and disabled.
Since food security has become a major concern for the organisation, the Team from Hollywoodbets kindly opted to donate food hampers containing essential items to them on Tuesday, 27 July. This effort forms part of the #HopeIsPower campaign that aims to assist organisations that have been severely affected by the recent unrest. In terms of the future, Hollywoodbets also aims to sustain a good relationship with the organisation and aid them in their efforts to further help people in need.
“Many of the stores around us were looted. Many of the people that live in the area became unemployed as businesses around us were looted and burnt down. We have experienced food shortages and now, unemployment.” Speaking about the contribution from Hollywoodbets, he added, “I am overwhelmed by what I see because much of it wasn’t expected, and there is a lot of essential food items and cleaning aids that we will package together and distribute.”
