"I started running barefoot myself back in 1989 as my family was very poor and struggling to even put food on our table, so having running shoes was a luxury I couldn’t even dream of. I relied on donations from my employers where I worked on weekends as a gardener during my primary and high school days. After completing my studies I worked for SALGA and Parliament of the RSA and eventually as Director in the National Transport Department for 7 years. This obviously improved my finances and that of my family so I decided to start helping many fellow runners who are less privileged than me," he told #TheTopRunner.

The Dolphins embarked on an extended Mandela Day project in the Valley of 1,000 Hills. In commemoration of Nelson Mandela Day, the Dolphins picked Nyuswa Senior Primary School, located at the Valley of 1,000 Hills in Botha’s Hill, as this year’s recipients of ’67 Minutes for Mandela’. Dolphins players, KZNCU staff, Associated Host Catering, sponsors Hollywoodbets, AmaZulu FC and members of the KZN Cycling Federation all came together to make this a special day for pupils at the school.

The club first started training players in 2010 with the aim to keep youngsters off the streets and to also unify the community through sports. The youngsters get together to practice five days a week to keep their skills up to par and this is truly impressive.

In February the Edith Benson children’s home in Sherwood experienced disaster as fire destroyed the entire babies home that housed 57 children between the ages of three months and five years. Thankfully, due to regular fire drills by the staff, no-one was hurt! At the time a call went out to all Durban residents and businesses to show their support by donating goods or money to help them in this time of need.

The Hollywoodbets Dolphins dedicated their 24 January match against the bizhub Highveld Lions to a worthy cause – the Childhood Cancer Foundation SA- KZN region. Supporters were encouraged to wear blue to the stadium to raise awareness about this cause. On top of that, Hollywoodbets pledged to donate R250 to the organisation for every boundary hit during the match. The Hollywoodbets Dolphins were up to the challenge hitting 22 boundaries in total while the Lions racked up a respectable 14. CHOC will therefore receive R9 000 as a result of this exciting match that ended in favour of the Hollywoodbets Dolphins.

A few weeks ago the Estcourt Hospice Association decided that the old house they operate from needs a revamp in some parts. Thus far, generous donations have funded most of the materials needed. Estcourt Hollywood Bets donated R10 000 towards paint and maintenance of the building. Primer, roof paint, three bathroom scales and wall paint were purchased with the money.

KAMGELO Community Centre is an organisation that has been doing incredible work within their community for the past five years. Its members care for people who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. Workers visit beneficiaries in their homes and help with cooking, cleaning and schoolwork. The Hollywoodbets Alberton team decided to pay Kamgelo a visit and show their support. They delivered new uniforms for the care workers, stationery, a computer, doors, tiles, ceiling panels and a whiteboard that will be used for meetings.
Durban hosts 5th Daredevil run

A group of 120 men gathered at College Rovers to complete the 2017 Hollard Daredevil run. This annual event is in its 5th year and aims to raise awareness about men’s cancers by having a group of men run 5km along the beachfront wearing only speedos. This year’s race was well-supported despite gloomy weather conditions. Hollywoodbets, a bookmaker with a national footprint, entered the largest number of runners with 24 in total running the race.

Club staff members have been working with the youth in their community for the past six years. Meadowlands Harmony was started to help educate kids in the area through football, and to help keep them off the streets. With over 78 players between the ages of 8 and 19 years the club appreciates all sponsorships. The club’s Chairperson is thankful for Hollywoodbets’ support. “This donation has helped to bring about change. It has motivated all the layers to see the importance of playing soccer and staying away from crime,” he said.
