Hazyview, Mpumalanga: In a heartwarming celebration of community upliftment and youth empowerment, on 30 July, the Hollywood Foundation unveiled a brand-new solar-powered prefabricated kitchen facility, a dining area, and ablution facilities equipped with a JoJo tank and power pump at the Goromane Home Based Care Centre in Hazyview, Bushbuckridge.
The development marks the first of four major infrastructure handovers taking place across Mpumalanga this Mandela Month, with upcoming initiatives scheduled for Louisville, KwaMagugu, and Amsterdam, all aligned to critical areas of education and food security.
The Goromane Home Based Care Centre, a vital community hub that provides daily meals and educational support to180 orphaned and vulnerable children, had previously operated from a modest three-roomed house. Limited space and harsh weather conditions often forced the Centre to turn away children in need. The new infrastructure now offers a safe, hygienic, and sustainable environment where children can receive nourishment and academic assistance without disruption.
Hollywood Foundation’s investment aligns with its broader commitment to community development through its “MyCommunity” pillar, and echoes the spirit of Nelson Mandela by creating meaningful, lasting impact in underserved areas. The Mpumalanga
contributions form part of the R10 million investment allocated nationally for Mandela Month projects in 2025.
The handover event was attended by Hollywood Foundation representatives, local parents, community members, and learners, many of whom expressed heartfelt gratitude. “We never imagined that an organisation as small and deeply rural as ours would be considered for such a life-changing contribution,” said Letty Mdlovu, Centre Coordinator at Goromane. “This facility will transform the way we care for our children and offer them hope for a better future.”
Vuyisile Ngobese, Public Relations Officer at the Hollywood Foundation, alluded that “Our relationship with the Centre began on Nelson Mandela Day in 2023, when we first supported their nutrition programme. However, seeing the conditions they were operating under made it clear that more needed to be done. We felt a deep responsibility to return with a more meaningful investment that could support the overall operation of the facility, which has since become a true safe haven for children in the area. This is more than just infrastructure, it’s a fresh start for young lives that deserve every opportunity to thrive”.
